There probably haven’t been many matches in Olympia’s rich history which has been decided under the floodlights… Not that the floodlights helped a lot when trying to follow the balls. Ask Eric who thought he went for an easy catch, but felt the ball landing on exactly the spot he didn’t want to instead in his eagerly outstretched hands. Or ask Jurgen who saw the ball for the last time in the 15th over and is probably still wondering what is going on. Or maybe who should ask the Excelsior’20 batsmen who were facing some fierce bowling from Jason, Moishin and Silva in the last overs of the match.
Now the end of the season is nearing quickly Olympia 2 is back to its winning ways. While in the beginning of the season or the bowling or the batting seemed to fail, the last couple of matches both departments are putting in decent efforts. So, the 2nd team took the 2 points for the 4th time this season. And to be fair the only one troubling the Olympian bowlers (and the scorers, thanks Roelien!) was the dreaded Mr. Extra who topscored Olympia's fielding innings with no less than 70 runs... Almost half of the runs that Ghausia Feijenoord managed to put on the scoreboard. Without this self-inflicted trouble the match would probably have been a walkover.
Scoring a century in a T20 is quite special. Making two in a row actually is unbelievable. But last night Silva scored 108 not out, a week after his 105 retired… And again his knock decided the match. And if this wasn’t enough to demoralize VCC, he bowled a wicket-maiden as well in his 2 over spell. In which he took all doubts about the outcome of the match away.
Although Rick tried his best to give VCC a glimmer of hope when he bowled the 18 over. He went for more than 20 runs and suddenly the match was kind of on again with a target of 36 from the last 2 overs. But the 6’s (and looking for the ball) meant a delay in play and as a consequence the ground became darker and darker. We were more playing on sound and praying that the ball was going in someone else’s direction as it became almost impossible to see the ball.
After the victory against Eindhoven C.C. last week Olympia had the tough task to go to Punjab in Rotterdam and get 2 points. The race against Eindhoven for 3rd place in the competition is tense and both teams cannot afford to spil any points.
Fonzie as captain (2 tosses and two wins) had a simple message to all the players: enjoy yourself, and that is what Olympia did. The openers bowled tight (Silva and M. Khan) and runs were not easily scored and so read the scoreboard after 20 overs. 65 for 4 and Reno, the outstanding bowler, with 3 wickets.
But with wickets in hand Olympia knew they had to bowl tight and with the substitutes it was important to rotate the parttime bowlers. So Fred & Fred(erik) shared a few overs between them.
In a true all-round effort (10 players bowled and 10 players batted) Olympia scored 203 runs in their 2nd match of the T20 league. While we call it an all-round effort, we mean to say a brilliant display of seemingly effortless batting from Silva. He retired voluntarily on the score of 105 after 15 overs. Silva’s big partnerships with Sander (76) and Niels (78) made sure that the spectacular batting collapse that followed his retirement didn’t cause too much damage. Silva reached his fine landmark (and a place in Olympia’s history books because of the first ever century in a T20-match) with the score on 160 for 3.
Last Thursday Olympia played its 2nd match in their regional equivalent of the glamorous IPL tournament. But with a little less media attention and to be fair, less glamour and much less public / atmosphere. That was made clear 10 minutes after the scheduled starting time of the 1st match a week ago. When we found out that our opponents wouldn’t be arriving at our ground due to ‘not existing anymore’… . While you never can predict what will happen in India, you wouldn’t expect Chennai Super Kings not showing up for the tournament opening match… . But this is cricket in the Netherlands so actually everything is possible.
After the tight win at home against Warnica Star the Olympians set out to play a match against title candidate Excelsior '20 in Schiedam. Expecting to play on a grass wicket with overcast conditions in the morning it was a crucial toss, which we lost. Olympia was sent in with a clear cut message from the captain, lower your stance and play straight. The opening partnership (9) set the tone for the game. The wicket was slow and keeping low, with the odd one skidding through. The way the wickets fells (except for S. Geenevasen (15), N. Fundter en S. Silva), was typical for the way the wicket behaved. A lot of guys early in the shots and expecting more bounce.
In a match with a lot of ups-and-downs Olympia 2 almost made a shock win in the 4a League. Almost, but in the end there were too many downs to beat league-toppers Qui Vive 6.
The first down was the arrival time of our opponents. Just an hour late... . But we didn't have to wait long for the first high. Our opening pair did exactly what they had to do: Frustrate the Qui Vive bowlers. Thomas and Rick did exactly that for 10 overs.
On a hot summer day Olympia 1 won a thriller against Wanica Star by 12 runs. Early in the innings Fred Cazius was his pedestrian self with a dogged 7 runs in 15 overs forming the backbone of yet again a 50 partnership for the first wicket with his captain.
.... the new caps! The introduction of the pretty caps came at the same time as the summer! So they were well used last Sunday.
After winning the toss and a brilliant first wicket partnership between Fred H. (72) en Arun (22) of 96, Olympia 2 expected a bit more than 159 all out. Fred took on the bowlers straight away with a couple of boundaries in the first overs, while Arun made sure he rotated the strike. With, apart from sometimes a bit confusing running between the wickets, no real problems they almost reached a 100 without losing a wicket. But Fred and Arun just fell short. Maybe due to the jinx of the scorers or was it just the high temperature...
